This project is based off of the "Banned Books Week" sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA). It provides a variety of lists of banned and challenged books. You can search by classics, by decade, or by century. The list I am offering is "The most challenged books from 2000-2009." It has some contemporary titles, like Harry Potter, but it also has classics listed. I feel that is a good list to choose from. Each student should consult with their parents to find a book on the list that they are comfortable reading.
I had this project in high school in sophomore English. It is a fairly simple project, but to me it made a huge difference to my perspective on reading. I was not much of a reader until I saw this list. Once I had it in my hands I tried to read the "classics." I read Catch-22, Slaughterhouse-5, Catcher in the Rye, and many others. This teacher is who I credit with turning me towards choosing English as a career.

Banned Book Project
- Finish book by 19 october
- Project Due 26 October
This is a simple project. Choose a project and read it on your own time out of class. Write a 150-200 word summary on the book. Then, research why the book has been banned or challenged in the United States. You can explore the ala.org/bbooks/ website, or you can go to your public library and ask the librarian, or you can perform a google search. Then write a 150-200 word summary of why it has been challenged. Once the student has done these three things, they will create a poster highlighting the book they have chosen. Finish reading by 19 October. Project due 26 October.
